We had a “dramatic” crossing from Cherbourg, France to Rosslare, Ireland. Gale force winds and high seas kept us rocking and rolling for about 18 hours of travel. Luckily we had a nice cabin aboard the Irish Ferries Oscar Wilde ferry. Also, we both wore seasickness patches and pills and we made it through relatively unscathed from the trip. We got into Waterford in time to have a lovely meal made by Marian Conroy. Then David and Eugene Conroy headed to the Cove pub for a couple of pints. We had a lovely day of chat and catching up with Marian, Eugene, Eoin and Catriona, Fran and Myra and multiple children on Saturday. We will try and post pictures later.
After a great night of rest on Saturday night, we woke to sunshine and blue skies. “The day was in it”. We had heard that the new bike way between Waterford and Dungarvan known as the Waterford Greenway which runs along an old railroad path was brilliant. The entire length is around 29 miles, and we decided we could do about half of that. There is bike rental at the midpoint, and they provide a shuttle van back if you need it (we did…). Rod Snavely and Kelly Schuler would love this, and they were there with us in spirit.
The trail follows through hills and valleys in some of the most beautiful scenery in Ireland. There were all ages on the trail. There was a strong headwind in some sections, but generally that seemed to be in the nice downslope regions. We started with multiple layers on, but pretty quickly David started unzipping various items. No, not his pants!
There are spectacular bridges.
And cool and damp tunnels.
And lovely ladies along tree and fern lined routes.
There are even “Fairy Doors” along the sides of the moss covered walls done by local children for the “wee folks”. I believe we saw some of the folk slumbering in the shade.
At the end you come out at the Dungarvan coast. We revived ourselves with a well earned pint.
The bike trail sounds great! It is good there is a beer stop too.
